I’ve been rewatching ep 19 & 20, and I just don’t get why Shihoko would use her power before committing suicide. Did she target someone offscreen? Try to target the Baseball Hat Guy and failed? Was it just a scare tactic to prevent Huang from following? That moment just confused me. :O

Also, Huang said to meet at 1600 hours, which is 4pm in Japan. Is it dark at 4pm already there? Or maybe they planned for a bit before going in…

Okay okay, I was thinking about this more and I had another idea. So Shihoko’s payment is to be human right? So when she was escaping with Huang, she kills someone, and when they’re back at Bar BROWN she totally loses it. Because she’s human enough to comprehend the consequences of her actions. She feels guilt for killing a dude.

Ya feel me?

We also know that a Contractor will do anything to stay alive. It’s part of the contract or whatever. So I don’t think a Contractor can actually commit suicide because it would go against their base nature of self preservation.

Okay you getting this?

So Shihoko uses her power before she flings herself in front of a bus because her payment is to make her human. It’s the only way she can override her self preservation as a Contractor. She had to have used her power in order to make a payment, then during that payment, she kills herself.

@darkerthanevanescence *slams table* whoa. Thanks for dedicating your work day cells for time idea. Like wow that makes sense.

But that begs the question… why did Alma also committed suicide? I like the idea that Alma & Shihoko killed themselves while still contractors….

Honestly I feel like Alma killed herself purely out of spite. But to some degree I feel like it was different from Shihoko. Shihoko chose to end her life, but that had nothing to do with her contract or payment. Alma’s payment was to grow older every time she used it, similarly to Amber killing herself. I feel like it was more the effect of her payment than a purposeful choice to kill herself like Shihoko’s was. Alma and Amber knew they would only have one more chance to use their power. Amber used her’s so Hei could choose both humanity and contractors. Alma used hers to give herself time to explain her actions to Hei. Which was really important plot-wise, because after that Hei really started to reconsider his views of Contractors.

I don’t think that really explained anything, just that the effect of a payment aren’t really considered “suicide” since the contract causes it.

So it’s more like “heroic sacrifice”?

That seems more fitting than suicide

But didn’t Shihoko… Sacrifice herself as well?

Can the other fellowship members speak up? :3

@thereal-tsuki-llama @major-victory @lolgirl607 @themoonslayer

She had a personal sacrifice. For Huang. Amber and Alma did it for the greater good of Contractor-kind. I don’t know if that makes a difference

I have to watch that ep again - I don’t remember Shihoko using her power before running into the truck; but @darkerthanevanescence your theory makes sense.

About Alma and Amber - yes they definitely sacrificed themselves for something that they believed in, which goes against their contractor nature…but because they had slowing been changing over the years, they could do that. Neither of them had to use their power as much as they did, in the way that they did. They did it knowing what the consequences would be, and chose it anyway.

Contractors in the beginning probably never could go against their nature like that.

Sacrifice vs suicide - the distinction is really in the eye of the beholder. Either way, no, I would agree that a contract payment wouldn’t cause it. At least, the contractor, knowing that the next payment would be their last, wouldn’t choose to use their power. Unless they’d evolved to a point where their emotions override their self-preservation instinct.

…what was the original question again?
