Call me a Stalin-apologist, but remember that the USSR had a lot more citizens and lasted longer than, say, Nazi Germany, since people often compare the death numbers of these 2 countries. Same applies for the people saying China killed a lot more people - because they had a lot more people over a longer time. But these numbers aren't always trustworthy after a certain amount anyways, because some people actually count the Nazis from WW2 as people killed by Stalin's USSR, so that's that.

True, but he still ultimately did horrible things to his own people

The USSR lasted longer because it was more subtle at better at keeping the west from retaliating (Cold War, for example),

He was still a violent and oppressive evil empire that abused and starved it’s people along with imprisoning any desenters.   

Stalin committed genocide against the Ukranian people during the Holodomor and that remains a largely forgotten fact in history.
