First of all, I gotta say I’m quite sorry so-nonexistent. I haven’t gotten to answering this for a while. Been several months. Dayum. Well I’ve finally decided to give this time.
Now a few things before I start. This is not a post about:
- Why Ichiruki sucks
- Why Ichiruki won’t happen
IT’S BASICALLY ME GIVING MY OWN OPINION ON WHY I DO NOT LIKE ICHIGO AND RUKIA TOGETHER (REGARDLESS IF THEY END UP TOGETHER OR NOT.)
Lastly this might be long and boring. So beware.

So, when I first started Bleach, I watched the anime. And let me tell you I thought Ichiruki would be endgame. You know that cliche, boy meets girl, girl meets boy, and BAM! Well so that happened. I still didn’t find them an attractive couple though. Their interactions were really not working for me. I admit the scene where Rukia was holding Ichigo in the rain after he fought the hollow who hurt his mother, that one scene did get to me, but by that time Orihime was also given screen time and it was obvious as hell she had feelings for Ichigo so I kept wondering about her too. Not to mention Tite even bothers to include Orihime in that story via Tatsuki. It kept me excited.
So I was stuck with three options for Ichigo: Orihime, Rukia and Tatsuki, AND LET ME TELL YOU. From the three girls the one I shipped seriously with Ichigo first was Tatsuki. Orihime, I honestly found annoying, and this is all fault of the animation studio (SCREW YOU PEIROTT) because when I read the manga I loved her. I also wasn’t a fan of Rukia either, because I found her whiny and annoying too. My favorite female character in the beginning of Bleach was actually Tatsuki. She was so awesome and badass, and I thought Kubo would take her character further. And he totally proved me wrong by giving Orihime the prominent role. (Not that I mind it anymore. XD) Anyway, I don’t even know why I’m mentioning this, but I just felt it had to do with me not shipping IR.
Anyway, I really admired Ichigo and Rukia’s relationship. They were hilarious. But the whole time I kept getting a “buddy” vibe, and thanks to Kubo for confirming that later on from a movie interview! The only time I saw a chance for them being romantically involved was during the SS arc, but even that didn’t sell it for me. Let me try to go with things in order.
So When Rukia had to go back to SS, I thought it was really nice of Ichigo to go save Rukia, but what tipped me was the fact that he was doubting to go save her. If he truly “loved” her, he would go on spot, and the thought of saving her or not wouldn’t even cross his mind. She meant a lot to him, and that’s obvious, there’s no denial there. But throughout his journey in Soul Society he kept telling everyone there that he had to pay her back for what he did. AND WELL HE SHOULD. But even then, no blush or indication of him feeling for her more than a friend. And I was like, Imma let this get further, I won’t judge yet.
AND THEN FREAKIN RENJI’S BACK STORY WITH HER WAS REVEALED AND THAT’S IT. I WAS SOOOOLD. RENRUKI WAS ACTUALLY THE FIRST BLEACH SHIP I TOOK SERIOUSLY.
I didn’t even ship Ichihime yet, as for Ishihime, I kind of shipped it, but I didn’t think it’d go anywhere. (Guess I was right.) Yah, so basically Renji is the #1 reason that stopped me from EVER considering IR again.
Anyway, moving on, Ichigo saves Rukia, and what does he do, THROWS HER LIKE A ROCKET LAUNCHER FROM GOD KNOWS HOW MUCH FEET FROM THE SKY. FOR ME THAT’S A HUGE RED LIGHT.
After a little Renruki action here and there, the scene where Ichigo and Rukia comes when they are saying goodbye. Now seriously dude, Ichigo was totes okay leaving Rukia, and Rukia was also totes okay. They both had no regrets leaving each other because they were happy to be where they decided to be, and both accepted that. That screams FRIENDSHIP, not romance to me. Again, no regret, no panel afterwards of Ichigo or Rukia having feelings of “longing” each other, unlike how Isshin and Masaki did. And Ichigo was pretty darn happy even without Rukia, with his friends and family back in the human world doing his thing.
So anyway, Rukia comes back because of the espada incident and kicks him out of his funk. I expected some kind of sappy reunion, but Rukia kicks him, kind of like how Ichigo kicked her when they first met LOL, and drags the dude away. LOL I’m not saying romances don’t have couples fighting and hitting each other like that, but at least those couple give some sort of vibes and hints of ACTUALLY LIKING EACH OTHER. Anyway, what does Rukia do next? She takes him to Orihime and leaves them two alone. I was like woah! And at that point I STILL didn’t ship IH. These two are totes buddies for life for doing stuff like that.
Anyway, Kubo gives some perverted hints happening in the bedroom via Isshin and Yuzu when Rukia decided to stay with Ichigo. But then, BAM! Kubo has Karin own that situation with that “orihime” comment. XD So nothing really happens in the bedroom. Ichigo doesn’t even appreciate her artwork at all unlike Renji. Then there’s that scene with Ichigo being tempted by rangiku stripping, and from my POV, Rukia don’t look too jealous. She’s just like “you idiot, your contradicting yours self by peeking”.
Later on after the fights, Rukia is horribly injured because of Grimmjow. Ichigo is looking down at her. This situation I feel is greatly taken out of context imo. Before that happened, Ichigo made a promise that he’d get stronger and protect his friends, but yet again he “fails” and someone is hurt again. I don’t think he was staring at her out of love. He had that super depressed look before until Rukia kicked him out of it, and then he just got it again after failing his resolve.
Another thing is Ichigo gets involved with the Vizards, and I found it shocking that he didn’t tell Rukia, because you know they are like best buds right? Later when Orihime finds the hide-out, and as she’s leaving she sees Rukia outside waiting. Rukia shows no sign of jealousy at all. She’s just glad that Ichigo’s okay.
THEN ichihime happens to me.
After this I couldn’t consider shipping Ichiruki ever ever EVER again, nor could I see them ever getting together in canon. (I’m actually getting really bored typing this out, so I’ll move a little faster.)
When Orihime is captured Ichigo doesn’t bother asking ANYONE after he gets rejected by Yama-ji, and just wants to leave. Rukia later tag-team slaps Ichigo with Renji for that. Like he leaves her behind ya know while knowing she’s a capable fighter. Then when they decide to split up, he “humiliates” Rukia by saying they should stick together because apparently she couldn’t take care of herself.
Oh wait, I thought IR fans said they thought Ichigo saw her as an equal.
Rukia, as a major character barely started appearing, so i was losing interest in her altogether. And ever since the HM arc when she does, it’s always with Renji, even till now.
Going back, Ichigo’s meeting with Ulquioura really showed me which girl he’d prefer. I mean you have Rukia bleeding to death, but one word about Orihime, and Ichigo was all out. XD
At the end of the HM arc, Kubo gives us that sad yet sweet moment with them saying good bye. I again expected some kind of indication that they liked each other more than friends, but still none. No touching even. At least a hug?
So we later see Ichigo’s emo now, because he has no powers and he can’t see his friends no more. And I thought it was really significant that Rukia was the one who returned his powers. But after that scene. BAM! Kick in his face, and yells at him like she his momma.
So after all that jazz with Ginjo, off-screen, the shinigami go back home, no special IR good-bye scene like the previous two arcs. Ichigo is all good now. This new arc starts and there are only a few things left for me to say. While Rukia, Renji and Byakuya are hurt and are being taken to the Royal Realm, Ichigo isn’t concerned about being there, he’s worried more about other things. Only when he’s satisfied with how things are in HM with Hime, Chad and Urahara, does he feels calm and leaves for the RR. He’s really not that love-sick puppy for Rukia like some fans claim.
Then there’s that scene in the hot srpings. OMG. Like this dude is mortified by her cute peachy butt, he doesn’t look like he minds that she’s in there naked with him and 3 other guys, and forgets about what happens two seconds later by asking about Byakuya.
Ever since then, Kubo has not shown us them together. Till now, no canon feelings from either sides. If you wanna argue eye-smex, well this whole damn manga would be an Ichi-harem then.
Ichiruki is a ship that could’ve been romantic, but I feel Kubo didn’t go that route and probably will not. Damn Anime though makes it look like some crappy love story. Renji and Orihime are two major factors I don’t ship them as well as the reasons I gave throughout this boring and lengthy jumbled mess of mine. I don’t ship Renji and Orihime with Rukia and Ichigo just because they love them, but well…that’s a whole another post.
And I also never saw the appeal in looks either. Like there are ships where I don’t think the two look good together, but have awesome romantic chemistry. And then there are ships for e.g. like Sasuhina. I actually don’t ship it, but God DAMN, do I love the way those two look together. In Ichiruki, I don’t see the appeal either way. I don’t find them cute together neither in terms of looks or personality. They don’t mesh well either way in my eyes.
Anyway, this is the end. I also just wanna say that I have nothing against those who ship this couple. Everyone has a right to like what they want. Kubo’s gonna decide it, and if he does go that way, then tbh I actually am ready for that. I’m not going to stop loving Bleach or ichihime, Renruki just because of that.
So glad to get that off my chest. Don’t expect any anti IR posts from me after a very loooooong time. Now I’m tired and gonna go make myself a sandwich.
