The very first IchiHime moment in the manga vs. the anime

In chapter two, Orihime is the very first of Ichigo’s school friends to be introduced, followed by Tatsuki.

Orihime’s feelings for Ichigo are pretty much established from the moment she’s introduced. Kubo wanted the reader to know ‘this is Orihime, she likes Ichigo’ right off the bat, clearly indicating that her feelings for Ichigo will play a significant role to her character and the story. Tatsuki questions why she likes him, listing some of his lesser qualities, but Orihime likes him anyway! She even names one of his signature traits (his scowling face) as something she likes about him. It’s a trait that scares her other friends away but Orihime likes it.

She’s not one girl in a crowd of many who likes Ichigo—instead, she is the only one who likes him. Kubo makes it apparent that her other friends are completely baffled as to why she likes him, but she still does. Her feelings for Ichigo are special and unique to Orihime’s character alone, setting her apart from the rest. Tatsuki mentions that he’s “cold,” but only 25 chapters later, Orihime tells Ichigo that he is kind for going to the Don Kanonji show with his family. And so, while others may have perceived him as cold or “scary,” Orihime sees through his tough demeanor to his kindness. And she likes it.

…And then we have the anime:

Orihime is introduced in episode two, (about 2:57 minutes in, in this video). Watch and witness the butchering for yourself.

Unlike the manga, her feelings for Ichigo are not immediately established. Instead of the cute scene where she talks to Tatsuki about Ichigo and why she likes him, she is shown talking about food instead—and this isn’t even the only time this happens in the beginning of the anime! I can think of at least two other instances when Orihime was talking/thinking about Ichigo in the manga, only for the animators to change it so that she was talking/thinking about food, instead. There seems to have been an agenda here of deliberately downplaying Orihime’s feelings for Ichigo.

Ichigo bumps into Orihime, knocking her to the floor. She drops her books and says “oww!” …And what does Ichigo do? He stands there, looking annoyed rather than apologetic, and says “Oh, it’s just you, Inoue,” like an absolute asshole. He does not even bother to apologize nor help Orihime up, until Tatsuki scolds at him to do so. Then, his face is zoomed in on, and Orihime jumps up, mutters incoherently for a prolonged moment, and then runs away as if she’s afraid of him—and Tatsuki says it’s because Ichigo has a mean look. So in the manga Orihime was shown to like his scowling face, but in the anime they’re making it seem like his face scares her, like it does all her other friends? Interesting.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, what makes the IchiHime slicing and dicing seem even more deliberate, is that immediately after this, Ichigo goes into the classroom and has the conversation about his house with Mizuiro—just like he did in the manga following Orihime’s first scene! Hmm, so what exactly was the need to replace that scene again? If literally everything else remained the same? The only thing that changed in this entire first scene of Ichigo being at school (other than Chad and Keigo being shown), was everything surrounding Ichigo and Orihime.

They took a cute scene that immediately established Orihime’s feelings for Ichigo as Kubo intended, completely cut it out, and replaced it with something that never even happened. With Ichigo being a complete dick to her.

First impressions are important. And for anyone who had started with the anime or who has never read the manga, this was their very first impression of IchiHime. That Orihime is a babbling fool who is scared of Ichigo rather than being the only girl who sees past his “scary” demeanor and likes him, and that Ichigo is an inconsiderate asshole who does not care about Orihime in the slightest, and even shows contempt for her. (“Oh, it’s just you, Inoue.”)

And to this day, people still claim he doesn’t care about her at all. It’s no wonder why, when the anime encouraged that line of thinking from the very moment IchiHime was introduced. (And this is only one example of several that were altered/omitted, particularly in the beginning.)
