I’m sure plenty have said it already, but I have the urge to write this, after reading yagami1211’s post. The director of Naruto confirmed that this “is the same ending that Kishimoto told him 8 years ago”.
In a 2006 interview, Kishi stated to have the conclusion in mind,
“I’ve already decided on the layout, text, and scenes. Not just the story ideas, but the visual ideas are solid“ - Kishimoto

2006 is before Deidara’s and Sasuke’s fight. It’s before Itachi’s death, before Sasuke reached the lowest depths of his darkness.
